A 21-year-old Albanian man has been arrested in Italy after being caught with 19 kilograms of high-quality marijuana, which he had transported from Thailand to Italy.
The young man arrived at Milan's Malpensa airport on a flight from Bangkok. According to Italian media, his suitcase immediately aroused suspicion among authorities, as it contained separate and packaged blocks of marijuana.
The police decided not to intervene immediately at the airport, but to keep the Albanian under surveillance to identify the people waiting for the shipment. He was followed to the Oderzo area, in Treviso, where the drug delivery would take place.
According to the investigation, the Albanian was given a van with two other people, and then he met with a local resident, accompanied by a friend of his. The exchange allegedly took place when the suitcase with the drugs was transferred to the car of a 30-year-old man.
At that moment, police officers intervened and arrested the Albanian and the other people involved in the operation.
After a preliminary hearing, the court decided that the 21-year-old Albanian should remain in prison. One of the Italians was placed under house arrest, while the other person was released after his involvement in drug trafficking was not proven.
The case has been transferred to the Busto Arsizio Prosecutor's Office, as authorities consider that the main criminal offense was committed at the moment the drugs were introduced into Italian territory.
