A Greek court has found a 44-year-old man of Albanian origin guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment for premeditated murder. The young man killed his 31-year-old wife in the Dafni area of Athens.
The incident occurred on July 30, 2021, when, according to forensic expertise, Anisa, the victim, was stabbed twice in the neck, while she was allegedly lying in bed and did not even realize what was happening. The perpetrator used a 28-centimeter kitchen knife.
The court sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment, along with an additional sentence of 24 months in prison, without any mitigation or reduction of sentence.
The author, who had owned a fast-food restaurant in the Haravgji area, Dafni, for several years, lived with his wife and their young son.
According to neighbors' testimonies to Greek media, the relationship between the couple was problematic, with frequent arguments, jealousy on the part of the husband, and the victim often asking for help loudly, calling "help" from the balcony of the apartment.
According to the victim's family lawyer, during the trial, the perpetrator attempted to justify his actions with allegations of an extramarital affair on the part of the victim, something that was not proven and was categorically rejected by the Court.
"His behavior was considered completely reprehensible and no mitigating circumstances were recognized ," the lawyer emphasized in a statement to the media.
"As legal representatives of Anisa's family, we express our satisfaction for a fair and well-argued decision by the Greek judiciary. This decision cannot bring back the lost life, but it sends a strong message of justice and faith in the rule of law ," the statement concludes.
In his testimony after the crime, the 44-year-old of Albanian origin presented his act as a moment of "mental blackout", partially attributing responsibility to the victim.
"I am spiritually devastated and remorseful from the first second after what happened ," he said, adding that immediately after the crime he surrendered to the police, where he confessed everything.
He emphasized that he is asking the authorities, but above all the parents of my wife and our only child.
The 44-year-old claimed he failed to control himself, confessing that he had set up a voice recording device at home and listened to recordings that had "driven him crazy."
"My mind went blank. I didn't know what I was doing ," he said, noting that the recordings contained episodes of his wife having an extramarital affair, allegations that were never proven and were rejected by the Court.
As evidence, he submitted a USB stick with his wife's conversations with a third person, attempting to legitimize the allegations of infidelity. According to him, "I couldn't stand the woman I loved doing such things in our house, even in the child's room."
The author described the moment of the murder in horrifying detail, claiming that he entered the room with a 28-centimeter-long knife and stabbed her twice in the neck while she slept.
He confessed that he covered her mouth with his hand to stop her from screaming and that after she stopped resisting, he left, left the knife next to her body and cleaned the blood from his hands.
In an attempt to minimize his responsibility, the 44-year-old claimed that they argued frequently, that she had asked for a divorce, and that his wife insulted and physically hit him. However, these claims were not confirmed during the investigation or by witnesses.
