Three people have been jailed on charges of blackmailing a businessman in Thessaloniki, as Greek authorities investigate a complex case involving threats, violence and suspicions of criminal coordination from within the prison.
According to police, the arrests were made following a complaint made by the manager of a car dealership in the Vasilissis Olga area. The three suspects, two Albanian citizens, aged 43 and 34, and a 23-year-old Greek, were detained after giving explanations to investigators and were then remanded in custody.
The same investigation also includes a 48-year-old man, currently in prison, who is suspected of organizing the cell robbery scheme. He reportedly has criminal records for murder and drug trafficking.
Alleged extortion scheme
According to the complaint, initially an amount of 200,000 euros was demanded, through threats to life. Subsequently, through a person who took on the role of “negotiator”, the amount was reduced to 100,000 euros. The police organized a controlled meeting, where 50,000 euros were handed over as part of the operation to catch them in the act. The three suspects were arrested at the moment they received the money, while during the search they were seized: a pistol with 11 cartridges, 6 mobile phones, a sum of money of 2,580 euros.
The businessman stated that after the denunciation, his vehicles were attacked with Molotov cocktails, and gunshots were reported in one of his businesses. Also, two people with covered faces allegedly threatened an employee at the workplace to exert psychological pressure.
During a search of the 48-year-old's cell, three mobile phones and an improvised knife were found. He reportedly resisted police control.
