Albania experienced a dark day on the roads today, with 4 victims and over 10 injured in five accidents that occurred within a few hours in Bulqizë, Peshkopi, Korçë, Fushë-Arrëz, Elbasan and Krujë.
Two miners lost their lives in the Qafë Buall–Bulqizë segment, after their Nissan vehicle went off the road, while another passenger was seriously injured. A woman died after an accident on the Peshkopi–Luzni road, while her husband is being treated in hospital. Three people were injured in Korça, three others in Fushë-Arrëz when a vehicle ended up in a bar, and two people were injured in Elbasan after a vehicle crashed into a cafe. In Krujë, a 4-year-old girl was accidentally run over by her father and died in hospital.
These events come at the height of the summer season, when traffic increases significantly and the presence of traffic police was expected to be maximum. But today's reality highlights a clear lack of controls, signals and monitoring, raising serious concerns about road safety management.
Citizens and transportation experts have described the institutional response as delayed and insufficient, while the tragic figures of the day indicate a deep problem of prevention.
