Bulgarian authorities have seized a large shipment of marijuana worth almost 500,000 euros at the Gueshevo border crossing, after customs officers discovered the drugs hidden inside a truck entering Bulgaria from North Macedonia.
The vehicle, with Albanian license plates, was selected for a detailed customs inspection on June 6, according to the Customs Agency. During the search, officers found six bags containing a green plant-like substance with a strong odor, hidden in a specially constructed compartment inside the truck's cabin.
Customs officials reported that a field test confirmed that the substance tested positive for marijuana. The total quantity seized was 60,920 kilograms, with an estimated street value of 498,366.42 euros.
The truck driver, a 28-year-old Albanian citizen, attempted to flee the scene after being discovered, but was quickly stopped outside the checkpoint by Border Police units.
Following instructions from the Kyustendil District Prosecutor's Office, the driver was detained for up to 72 hours. Prosecutors are now seeking a court order to continue his detention while the investigation continues.
Officials involved in the operation stressed that the method of concealment indicated deliberate trafficking activity, with the drugs hidden in a modified structure inside the vehicle.
Authorities continue to investigate the origin and intended destination of the shipment as part of ongoing efforts to combat cross-border drug trafficking.
