DP Referendum: When the Alternative is Afraid of the Alternative

If the medieval ram attack on the gate of the SHQUP castle a few years ago was "democracy applied with physical force," today's single-candidate referendum is the absolute pinnacle of their political perfection.

It is said that the last few nights in Surrel have been filled with existential anxiety and that even chamomile aromatherapy is no longer working. Confidential sources close to the padishah's court whisper that Edi the Prime Minister is spending hours staring terrified out the window, his hands shaking as he holds his 15th cup of coffee.

The reason for this horror is not the DASH reports, nor the SPAK investigations, nor any domestic or global economic crisis. Rama is having sleepless nights because today he is facing the "Great Popular Tsunami" of the referendum within the Democratic Party. The plebiscite success of a process where the only candidate is winning by an overwhelming margin against no one, apparently, is going to shake the foundations of his regime.

In the Rilindja propaganda offices they are in total panic because they do not know how to attack a model where there are no debates to get stuck in, no platforms to clash with, and no rivals to leak secrets. The DP is showing such a renewal of the democratic spirit that it has made even the oldest parties on the continent jealous. This new legitimacy, won in a competition with itself where triumph was inevitable, has created such great energy that there is really no one to hold the main opposition party in the country anymore.

If the medieval battering ram attack on the gates of the SHQUP castle a few years ago was "democracy applied by physical force," today's single-candidate referendum is the absolute pinnacle of their political perfection. This "refreshed" leadership managed to successfully transition from medieval sieges to unopposed voting, setting a new record that truly makes the party deserve the name "Democratic."

The message for Rama is clear; if the opposition continues to vote for itself with this steely unity, the Prime Minister will be forced to hand over the keys to the office, if not out of fear, then certainly from the explosion of laughter that this puppet theater is giving every day.

And then the leaders of the DP wonder why a part of the electorate behaves with indifference towards them, why they do not come out in protests and why the youth left without hope is massively leaving the country. Because people can endure many things, but not to be treated like a spectator who has to applaud the same show that has had the same script and protagonist for decades and be convinced that this time the finale will turn out differently.

In the end, the biggest drama with today's uncontested vote for the DP is not simply its inevitable loss in the next elections nor its shrinking into a sect of fanatics. It is the fact that a party founded to bring pluralism to Albania, today seems to be afraid of the concept of alternative and competition even within itself.

How can this DP leadership be seriously expected to cure the disease of autocracy in Albania when it cannot even install the minimum of democracy within its own borders? /Pamphlet/
