Foreign trade is not in its best days. December figures show that Albanian products reached a value of 26 billion lek or 31.7% less than the same period a year ago.

On the other hand, imports did not experience the same trend, increasing by 8.3%, worsening the trade deficit.

The main groups that contributed to the decrease in exports in December are Construction Materials and Metals with a double-digit decrease, while the second group is minerals, fuels and electricity followed by the Textiles and Footwear sector.

All three of these industries are suffering the consequences of the depreciation of the euro in the domestic market, but also the combination of a number of other factors such as labor shortages or changing conjunctures in international markets.

Another picture is shown by imports. Albania has imported more machinery, equipment and spare parts, more food and minerals, fuel and electricity.

Throughout the year, Albania exported 68 billion lek less goods, or in other words 680 million euros less than a year earlier. At the same time, the country imported 22 billion lek more goods, or 220 million euros. This is the second year that exports have contracted.

INSTAT shows that Albania had a significant increase in imports with China, Turkey and Greece, turning them into its main trading partners, while it significantly decreased them with Italy, North Macedonia and Switzerland./ TCH
