From year to year there seems to be innovation for improvement in all areas. Euro banknotes will also undergo gradual changes, as they too must evolve and change shape over time. In fact, this has always been the case and some are now no longer produced.
Therefore, this can also happen with other types of banknotes that are old or little used.
Which banknotes will disappear from circulation?
Among the banknotes we see less and less in circulation are the 500 euro banknotes, which have now been discontinued with the production of the second series of European banknotes. The second series of European banknotes was called Europa, which is what we generally use today.
The main reason some banknotes disappear is to discourage illegal money transfers. So at certain times it is decided to change the design of the banknotes in an attempt to stop counterfeiting and make everything more legal.
Which banknotes will no longer be printed?
The 500 euro banknote has not been printed for over 10 years, but in fact, some denominations are still in circulation as the European Central Bank has never officially set an expiry date for them, meaning the rest will not be produced now and will gradually disappear.
This also applies to the 200 euro, as it is a very high denomination and not widely used. So it is believed that just like the 500 euro, the 200 euro will no longer circulate.
The European Central Bank's main goal is to focus more on physical money, trying increasingly to limit it, as it is not very traceable and can therefore encourage illegal trafficking. This is especially true for large denominations, as they are easier to transfer as they have more value.
Therefore, the state prefers electronic money, as it is easily traceable and therefore more controllable. Of course, paper money in general will not disappear completely for a long time, as there are still many people who use it and have no intention of switching to electronic money.
