The European Central Bank is continuing with a radical redesign of euro banknotes, aiming not only for aesthetic renewal but also for strengthening European identity.

The new series is expected to be officially launched by 2026, through a pan-European competition exclusively for professional graphic designers, which will highlight new creative proposals for the European currency.

According to the ECB's plan, the new series will be based on two thematic axes.

The first, titled "European Culture: Shared Cultural Spaces", will highlight personalities who left an indelible mark on the history and culture of Europe.

The banknotes will feature:

Maria Callas for 5 euros,

Ludwig van Beethoven for 10 euros,

Marie Curie for 20 euros,

Servant with 50 euros,

Leonardo da Vinci for 100 euros

and Bertha von Suttner with 200 euros.

This choice is expected to offer a balance between personalities from art, science and literature, highlighting Europe's shared cultural wealth.

The second theme, titled “Rivers and Birds: Resilience in Diversity”, will focus on the continent’s natural beauty and biodiversity. Each banknote will combine a characteristic landscape with a representative species of fauna, giving the new series an educational and environmental character.

At the same time, emblematic buildings of the European Union, such as the European Parliament, the European Commission, the ECB headquarters, the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Auditors, will stand out against the background of the banknotes, reinforcing the sense of unity and cohesion of the continent.

The final decision on the designs is expected by the end of 2026, while the release of the new series will mark a new era for the euro, combining tradition, cultural heritage and modern aesthetics.

The changes are expected to arouse strong interest not only among citizens, but also among banknote collectors, while paving the way for a renewed pictorial identity of the European currency.
