In Albania, Teachers' Day on March 7 is not just a moment of gratitude for them, but also a silent competition between parents and students to give the most special gift.
What was once symbolized by a bouquet of flowers and a thank you card has today turned into a veritable marketplace where luxury perfumes, jewelry, and even paid trips have become part of the tradition.
But how much does this celebration cost parents, and is the true value of gratitude fading amid this competition for gifts?
We are talking about a wide range of gifts, from books and book purchase coupons (2000-3000 lekë), to gold jewelry and accessories that can reach up to 30,000 lekë.
The range of other gifts considered are: books or coupons for the purchase of books worth 2000-3000 lek; jewelry starting from 2500 to gold accessories reaching 30 thousand lek; bouquets of flowers worth 1500-3500 lek, often accompanied by an envelope with monetary value or another symbolic gift; a form of collecting money so that the gift can be purchased jointly, where the amount contributed by each student varies from 1000-2000; coupons in certain stores, whether for accessories or household furnishings; trips, mainly within the country, to nearby destinations with hotel payment, etc.
Other forms of gifts include: perfumes or cosmetic set packages, starting at 2,500 lek. Also, fashion items such as elegant bags, wallets, sunglasses or belts are among the other forms of individual gifts given on March 7, the value of which starts at 2,000 lek.
This trend towards commercialization of the holiday has caused concerns among parents, who feel compelled to participate in this gift-giving competition to avoid differentiating their children.
As a result, the true value of March 7, which should focus on appreciation and gratitude for the dedication of teachers, is being diluted by the pressure to give material gifts.
However, despite the trend towards more expensive gifts, some students and parents prefer to preserve the tradition of homemade cards, adding a personal touch with thank-you messages./ Monitor
