The untold story of Edi Rama's anger with official London
Keir Starmer and Edi Rama /

The Prime Minister enters the cyclone that could overturn him.

Rama's attack on British Minister Mahmood seems like a nervous reaction, while diplomatic sources speak of serious decisions expected from Britain and the US regarding drug trafficking and money laundering. The announced sanctions could hit the main capitals in Albania and cause the strongest political crisis of the decade.

Edi Rama's outburst against the British Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, seemed pointless at first glance. The British minister did nothing more than articulate a normal standard of her country: anyone who does not deserve asylum cannot stay in Britain.

In fact, this policy line also serves the Albanian government, because it removes the country from the list of problematic countries where citizens flee out of fear, persecution or insecurity. The Albanian government should have welcomed this approach and used it as a political argument to show that illegal immigration is not related to repression, but to the search for economic advantages or illegal opportunities that cannot work in Albania.

However, Rama rushed to defend the exiles, taking an unnecessary political and diplomatic risk, not only in front of the British government, but also in front of the London media, which have long treated the Albanian government with skepticism on issues of immigration and organized crime. What is striking is the silence of official London after his reactions. There was no retort, no arrow, no public profile reaction. The silence seems more deliberate than dismissive. Apparently, the British were expecting this reaction and are using the silence to let Rama wear on his nerves, increasing anxiety about what may come next.

Behind the scenes, there has been talk for days in diplomatic circles in Tirana that London and Washington are preparing important decisions to be announced around Christmas. Decisions that could cause a major shock in official Tirana and that involve high-ranking figures in power, including figures at the top of the governing pyramid.

It is reported that London, which has long been dealing with drug trafficking and money laundering cases in Albania, will move first. If they decide to declare a much-discussed "non grata", then the blow will be stronger than the one the US took against Sali Berisha.

Meanwhile, it is said that Washington is expected to follow this step with a chain of sanctions that will directly hit capital invested in key sectors of the Albanian economy, affecting about 60% of the financial flows circulating through suspected money laundering schemes. Such a move would create a dangerous economic bubble, capable of collapsing the country's financial stability with the same speed that it was built.

The first case that the US publicly hit was that of Luftar Hysa, a well-known name with large investments, who was declared a threat to US security and included in the sanctions list. The blocking of his capital risks creating great dissatisfaction in the south of the country and could cause minor social unrest. If the other announced decisions come to pass, then this wave of strikes could turn Tirana into a ground of extraordinary pressure on the government, to the point of a real political crisis./ Pamphlet
