The Prime Minister demands the removal of the mayor of Tirana, while turning a blind eye to dozens of SP mayors under investigation or convicted...
The clash between Edi Rama and Erion Veliaj has come out in the open. The Prime Minister has ordered the dismissal of the mayor of Tirana, even though the law does not provide for such an act for a pre-trial detainee. If Rama turned a blind eye to other SP mayors, investigated or convicted, in the case of Veliaj he struck hard, turning the Municipal Council into a personal instrument of revenge. This is the political signal: the battle between the head of government and his "dolphin" has turned into a fight for life and death.
Following the Prime Minister's order to dismiss Mayor Erion Veliaj, which the SP councilors will swiftly implement in violation of Law No. 139/2015 "On Local Self-Government", the number of municipalities without mayors that must hold elections for new leaders has increased to 6.
SP municipalities where elections will be held:
-Elections will be held in the Municipality of Tirana because Edi Rama has given the order, although legally, as a pre-trial detainee, Mayor Erion Veliaj is not a legal subject for dismissal from office.
-Elections will be held in the Municipalities of Berat, Tepelena and Mat because former mayors Ervin Demo, Tërmet Peçi and Agron Malaj resigned in March and became MPs.
-Elections will be held in the Municipality of Vlora because Mayor Ermal Dredha resigned, under pressure from Prime Minister Rama.
-Elections will be held in the Municipality of Cerrik because Mayor Andis Salla was appointed minister.
Another 13 SP mayors with files in SPAK:
-Emiriana Sako, mayor of Durrës, is under investigation by SPAK for document falsification and corruption, for the waste disposal tender in the Tirana landfill, the bin tender and three reconstruction tenders, as well as abuses with rental bonuses.
-Armando Subashi, the mayor of Fier, is under investigation by SPAK for the Fier landfill land and fuel tenders awarded without competition to the trafficker and hitman Renato Çami.
-Kreshnik Hajdari, the mayor of Kuçova, is under investigation for the destruction of the water source and the Sinec Protected Park in Lumas, as well as for theft in the water supply tender with Pëllumb Salillari.
-Also under investigation by SPAK are the mayors: Ilir Xhakolli of Pogradec; Rexhë Byberi of Tropoja; Erion Isai of Kolonja; Majlinda Bufi of Roskovec; Tonin Marinaj of Malësia e Madhe; Eriselda Sefa of Lushnja; Kristian Shkreli of Vau i Dejës.
-The mayor of Rrogozhina, Edison Memolla, continues to be in office despite being sentenced to 1 year in prison for electoral crime. Meanwhile, Rama does not dismiss him.
- Also under investigation by SPAK for corruption are Tërmet Peçi of Tepelena and Agron Malaj of Mat, whom Babloku made deputies.
Facts that raise doubts about Edi Rama's attack on Erion Veliaj
-For the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, Rama ordered the Municipal Council to dismiss him, with the argument that he has been in detention for 7 months.
-For the mayor of Tropoja, Rexhë Byberi, Rama did not order dismissal, although he was 11 months under "house arrest" by decision of SPAK and the Special Court.
-The Municipality of Tirana has been without a mayor in office since February 10, 2025 and the Prime Minister requested his dismissal; meanwhile, the Municipalities of Berat, Tepelena and Mat have also been without mayors since March 6, 2025, but Rama has not ordered elections.
-In the years 2019–2022, Rama left the Municipalities of Durrës and Shkodra without mayors and did not order early elections for new mayors./ Pamphlet
