A mayor greedy for tenders covers one of the rarest works of European civilization with asphalt, while the government remains silent and the Minister of Culture pretends not to see...
This case is a classic example of “urban renaissance” that kills history. The mayor of Peqin, Bukurosh Maçi, boasts that he “restored” the Egnatia Road by paving it with asphalt. In fact, he committed a massacre on one of the rarest works of our heritage and one of the 10 most important roads of European civilization.

The government? It is silent. The Minister of Culture, Blendi Gonxhe, who appears as a "scholar" only when he has business interests, does not open his mouth. Prime Minister Rama, who calls himself a "cultural leader", pretends not to see. No institution is taking legal responsibility for a crime that the law clearly defines: unauthorized intervention on a cultural monument.
Auron Tare and the citizens reacted, because they know that Egnatia is not just any road, but a legacy that has survived from the Roman legions to this day. A road where emperors and armies passed, but they did not destroy it. And today a mayor who only sees the tender, not history, is destroying it.
The evil is not only the Peqin Mac, but the system that protects it. For an electric pole near a historical area, a special permit is required from the Directorate of Cultural Heritage. For asphalt on Egnatia, silence. Why? Because Rama and Gonxhe have no interests there. When a cave in Himara where they have a business project is destroyed, they scream. When the tender is for a weightless mayor, they close their eyes.
This is the next shame: Egnatia Road, a heritage of Europe and Albania, is covered with asphalt and called a "jewel of urban renaissance". In fact, it is just a jewel of tenders./ Pamphlet
