Local elections in North Macedonia, 39.6 percent of citizens voted by 5:00 PM

Local elections are being held in North Macedonia today, as 1.8 million citizens vote for mayors in 81 municipalities.

According to the State Election Commission, 39.61 percent of eligible citizens have voted by 5:00 p.m. 

According to SEC data, the highest turnout was recorded in the municipality of Novaci with 65.75 percent, followed by Çashka with 65.5 percent, Vevcan with 61.84 percent, Krushevo with 60.94 percent and Dojran with 60.91 percent.

The lowest turnout in the elections as of 5 p.m. was recorded in the municipality of Qendër Zhupa with 19.15 percent, followed by Vrapçishti with 20.94 percent, Mavrovo and Rostuša with 25.89 percent and Gostivar with 28.02 percent.

There are a total of 3,480 polling stations across the country. There are 309 candidates for 81 mayoral positions, while over 10,490 candidates from a total of 576 lists are running for council seats. These candidates come from a total of 22 parties, 19 coalitions and 119 groups of voters, namely independent candidacies.

Voting began at 07:00 and citizens will be able to vote until 19:00. Then the counting of votes will begin and the announcement of the first results.
