The Israeli military has announced the launch of a new wave of airstrikes in the southern Gaza Strip, describing the intervention as "extensive and intense", with dozens of targets hit in a short time. The attacks are mainly concentrated in areas around the city of Rafah, on the border with Egypt, while there is no official balance sheet on casualties or material damage yet.
The escalation comes at a time when the fragile ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump on October 10, is in serious danger of collapsing. The deal was intended to end more than two years of a devastating war between Israel and Hamas that has left thousands dead and Gaza in ruins.
Israeli forces have not given details about specific targets, but have justified the offensive as a response to new provocations by Hamas, including gunfire and grenades fired at Israeli troops in the Rafah area. Hamas, on the other hand, has denied any involvement in such incidents and has accused Israel of deliberately violating the ceasefire.
