What's in the Apollo Gallery and how common are thefts at the Louvre?

The Apollo Gallery in the Louvre, where a super robbery was reportedly carried out, is among the most precious in the French museum, as it houses the remaining crown jewels of France.

Most of the royal treasures disappeared or were sold after the French Revolution, but some objects of extraordinary historical and symbolic value remained. They include jewels later purchased for Emperor Napoleon, his grandson Napoleon III, and their wives – the Empresses Marie-Louise and Jeanne.

According to the Louvre's official website, the three most famous diamonds housed in this gallery are the Regent, the Sans, and the Hortensia - priceless stones that represent the glory and tragedy of the French monarchy.

Thefts at the Louvre are rare, but not impossible. The most famous one occurred in 1911, when Leonardo's Mona Lisa was stolen. At the time, the work did not have the fame it has today. Parisian avant-garde poets and artists, such as Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso, were questioned by the police, but in the end, an Italian who wanted to "return" the painting to his homeland was found guilty.

The painting was found in Florence three years later and returned to Paris.

Another mysterious theft occurred in 1983, when several pieces of a 16th-century suit of armor disappeared from the museum. They were found by chance in 2011. In 1998, the painting “The Street at Sevres” by artist Camille Corot was removed from the wall without anyone noticing – an incident that forced the Louvre to review its entire security system. The work remains missing to this day.
