Nine precious jewels from the collection of Napoleon and Empress Eugenie were stolen at dawn from the Louvre Museum in Paris, after a spectacular heist reminiscent of a movie.
According to Le Parisien, there were three perpetrators and they arrived at the museum on two scooters.
Then, wearing hoods to hide their features, they entered the building from the Seine bank side, where work was being carried out.
With the help of an elevator, they managed to reach directly to the first floor, to the famous Apollo Gallery, where precious jewelry and imperial relics are stored.
Using a chainsaw, they broke the windows and two of the perpetrators entered, while the third stood outside to observe.
They then headed to the Napoleon Gallery and the Gallery of French Rulers, from where they retrieved nine objects, including priceless necklaces, brooches, and tiaras.
According to a source inside the museum, the famous "Régent" diamond, the largest in the collection, weighing over 140 carats, was not among the stolen items.
The damage is being assessed based on photographs of the lost jewelry, while the Paris prosecutor's office has already opened an investigation for "organized theft" and assigned the case to the Crime Suppression Unit (Brigade de répression du banditisme - BRB).
During the investigation, one of the stolen items was found outside the museum building: it is the crown of Empress Eugenie, a work of art of incalculable value, which has been damaged. Authorities are examining the possibility that the perpetrators abandoned it during their escape, while the investigation continues to find the remaining jewels and the identity of the perpetrators.
According to Interior Minister Loren Nunez, the perpetrators had a very well-organized plan, which they executed in just 7 minutes.
It is recalled that from the first moment the theft was noticed, the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, rushed to the museum.
