Is Putin's arrest imminent? The danger from the Ilyushin II-96 aircraft and

Vladimir Putin will meet Donald Trump in Hungary, but the trip is complicated. This is due to the arrest warrant and only two relatively safe corridors left for the 'Tsar'. The meeting is expected to take place next Thursday, while this summit could bring an end to the war in Ukraine, if the parties agree.

Many observers are already wondering how this meeting could have taken place. Putin should have been arrested immediately at Budapest Airport, as Hungary remains a state party to the International Criminal Court until next June.

But in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the Russian president has an eminent advocate. The country even stated that it would welcome Putin “respectfully” to ensure that he “conducts successful negotiations and then returns home.” Therefore, the arrest warrant against the Russian leader will probably not be executed in Hungary.

The biggest risk for the Russian President is if there are problems with the Ilyushin Il-96, the plane on which the 'Tsar' travels.

If there are problems, the presidential Ilyushin Il-96 plane will be forced to make an emergency landing, possibly in one of the countries that adheres to the international treaty on the International Criminal Court.

Therefore, the fewer countries the Russian presidential plane flies over, the lower the risk for Putin on the way to the meeting with Trump.

In addition, a flight ban on Russian aircraft remains in force in large parts of Europe. The European Commission has said that member states can grant exemptions. However, these must be granted individually by each country. And therein lies the difficulty for Russia.

Putin's trip to Europe

The route east is virtually impossible. Since the scandal involving Russian drones and fighter jets in Polish airspace, Poland has little interest in allowing Putin to fly over its territory. And the Kremlin leader can't fly over Ukraine either.

Putin will almost certainly fly south first, heading to Central Europe via Turkey. This opens up two possible corridors for him.

The most likely route is through Serbia to Budapest.

On the one hand, Putin's IL-96 could fly to Budapest via Bulgaria and Romania. However, it is still unclear whether Sofia and Bucharest will agree to this.

Putin could also fly to Budapest via Serbia, which is friendly to Hungary. To do so, he would have to fly around Greece and then Montenegro.

But whether the government in Podgorica will agree to this is still unclear. What is known so far is that the journey will not be easy for Putin. / Adapted from Focus /
