Polls show that most Americans want an end to the conflict and have little confidence that the Trump administration can reach a favorable deal with Tehran...
President Donald Trump's war with Iran has not seemed convincing so far. A large portion of the American public expects the end of the conflict will not change that perception.
Polls in recent weeks paint a picture of an American public that is war-weary. Americans did not support the conflict from the start, do not believe it will bring significant positive results, and do not expect Iran to make significant concessions, or at least not concessions that would justify the political, economic, and strategic costs of war.
In short, there is very little confidence that Trump has a good way out of this war.
The Memorial Day weekend offered a stark glimpse into that perception. It was during that period that some of the most significant signs yet of real progress toward a deal that could end the conflict emerged. But as the details of the negotiations began to emerge, it became clear that they represented a red line for many hardline Republicans on Iran.
Some conservative Republicans warned that such a deal would not only not weaken Iran, but could leave it stronger than before the war. For them, any compromise that does not completely eliminate Iran's nuclear capability or Tehran's regional influence constitutes a strategic failure.
And if Iran continues to maintain its tough stance in negotiations, it remains unclear what kind of deal could allow Trump to simultaneously maintain political authority, declare a diplomatic victory, and end the war before it becomes an even greater burden on the Republican Party.
Some polls show that the American public simply wants the conflict to end.
A Fox News poll released last week showed that only 39% of registered voters support continuing US military operations “for as long as necessary to achieve US objectives.” Meanwhile, 61% prefer that the operations have a “limited duration.”
Similarly, a New York Times and Siena College poll showed that 52% of registered voters believe the United States should end military operations even if it does not reach a deal with Iran on its nuclear program.
Only 37% said they support resuming military operations if negotiations over the Iranian nuclear program fail.

Sipas sondazhit të Times-Siena, votuesit e regjistruar u shprehën me raport 55% ndaj 21% se lufta nuk do t’ia vlejë kostove që ka sjellë.
Sondazhet kanë treguar vazhdimisht gjithashtu se amerikanët mendojnë se lufta mund të jetë kundërproduktive në disa drejtime të rëndësishme.
Sipas sondazhit të Washington Post-ABC News, amerikanët besojnë: me raport 61% ndaj 11%, se lufta ka rritur rrezikun e terrorizmit kundër qytetarëve amerikanë; me 56% ndaj 12%, se konflikti ka rrezikuar dobësimin e marrëdhënieve ndërkombëtare të SHBA-së; me 49% ndaj 21%, se stabiliteti në Lindjen e Mesme do të përkeqësohet si rezultat i luftës.
Edhe nëse Trump arrin të sfidojë pritshmëritë dhe të sigurojë një marrëveshje të favorshme për SHBA-në, ai përballet me një problem tjetër madhor: amerikanët nuk i besojnë më atij në këtë çështje.
Sondazhi më i fundit i CNN tregoi se vetëm 20% e amerikanëve kanë “shumë besim” te Trump për të marrë vendime të mira lidhur me Iranin. Rreth trefishi i këtij numri, 59%, thanë se kanë “pak besim” ose aspak besim tek ai.
Trump tashmë është tërhequr nga disa prej kërkesave të tij më absolute.
Në një moment ai deklaronte se do të pranonte vetëm “dorëzim pa kushte” nga Irani. Në raste të tjera ai kishte thënë se objektivat kryesore të luftës ishin: eliminimi i plotë i programit bërthamor iranian; pamundësimi i Iranit për të financuar grupe aleate si Hamasi dhe Hezbollah.
Por bazuar në kushtet më të fundit të negociatave, këto objektiva duket se po zbuten gradualisht. Trump duket se ka bërë dy gabime themelore që në fillim të konfliktit.
Së pari, ai nuk kishte një plan të qartë dhe realist për mënyrën se si do ta përfundonte luftën.

On the contrary, he set a very high standard for success, so high that he will now find it difficult to achieve it without resuming a major military escalation and prolonging the war even further.
He also told the Americans, after launching the attacks, that the conflict would be worth it despite the costs and difficulties.
But polls clearly show that most Americans disagree with this assessment.
