Police and agents shot a man near the Washington Monument on Monday after he was seen walking with a gun near the White House, who then opened fire on them, according to a statement from the U.S. Secret Service.
Acting Secret Service Director Matt Quinn said plainclothes agents spotted the man around 3:30 p.m. (UTC) Monday near the White House and noticed he was carrying a concealed weapon. The agents then followed him and notified authorities.
According to him, the unknown man was alarmed when uniformed Secret Service officers approached him and tried to flee, opening fire on them, while the agents returned fire.
The man was taken to a local hospital and there is no update on his health at this time, Quinn added.
A juvenile was slightly injured in the exchange of gunfire and was also taken to the hospital. Quinn said he could not say for sure whether the juvenile was injured by the person's or the agents' bullets.
"We will let the doctors do their analysis," he said, noting, however, that "investigators believe he was hit by the suspect."
Local authorities urged people to avoid the area after the shooting occurred near the White House, where an event by US President Donald Trump was taking place at the time.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown while authorities investigated the incident. The Secret Service escorted reporters from the room, while Trump continued his speech without interruption.
The incident comes almost a week after a gunman attempted to attack the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
However, Quinn stressed that it is not yet known whether the incident is related to Trump. "I'm not going to speculate," Quinn said, adding "I don't know if the president was involved or not, but we'll find out."
