The BBC has issued a formal apology for the way it edited a portion of Donald Trump's speech delivered on January 6, 2021, shortly before the mob stormed the US Capitol. The corporation called the incident an "error in judgment" and announced that the material will no longer be broadcast on any BBC platform in that form.
The statement said the BBC "sincerely regrets the way the clip was edited," but also added that it sees no legal basis for the defamation allegations.
The backlash came after Donald Trump publicly accused them of "misleading the public," claiming that the Panorama program portrayed him as calling on citizens to attack Congress. In an interview with Fox News, Trump threatened a $1 billion lawsuit, saying: "I have to do it. You can't let people do things like that."
Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, sent the BBC a letter demanding that it immediately retract its "false, defamatory and inflammatory statements" about the former president. It said that if the BBC did not act, Trump "will have no choice but to pursue legal action, seeking no less than $1 billion in damages."
