Gaza flotilla scandal; activists accuse Israel of torture, violence and rape

Organizers of the humanitarian flotilla that aimed to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip have leveled serious accusations against Israeli authorities, claiming that the arrested activists faced physical violence and sexual assault, including cases of rape.

According to the organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla, some of the activists who were released from Israeli custody have ended up in hospital with various injuries. They also claim that at least 15 cases of sexual assault have been reported.

"At least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape. Shot with rubber bullets at close range. Dozens of people have broken bones," the flotilla's response on social media said.

Meanwhile, the Israel Prison Service has denied all allegations.

"The allegations made are false and completely without factual basis," a prison service spokesman told Reuters.

He added that "all prisoners and detainees are held in accordance with the law, with full respect for their fundamental rights and under the supervision of professional and trained prison staff."

On Tuesday, Israeli forces arrested 430 people aboard 50 ships in international waters, stopping a flotilla made up of volunteers who were aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Allegations of abuse have increased pressure on Israeli authorities to provide clarification on the treatment of detained activists, especially after the publication of a video in which an Israeli minister is seen mocking some of the detainees inside a prison.
