About a month ago, US President Donald Trump declared that he was "not at all concerned" about ending the war with Iran.
"I have all the time in the world, but Iran doesn't. The clock is ticking," he wrote on social media, suggesting that the pressure was on Tehran.
However, recent developments point to a more complicated situation for the US administration, writes CNN. Trump has avoided returning to direct military confrontation with Iran and has exceeded some of the deadlines he had set himself, even though Tehran has not met American demands. At the same time, pressure is increasing within the Republican Party to end the conflict, as the 2026 midterm elections approach and the economic consequences of the war are seen as a political burden for Republican candidates.
Already, key Republican figures known for their tough stances on Iran are expressing concern that Trump may accept a much softer deal than initially promised.
According to recently released information, drafts of a memorandum of understanding envisage a gradual cessation of hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US blockade on the area. The agreement would also include the unblocking of some Iranian assets and the restoration of Iranian oil and fuel exports.
In exchange, Iran would commit not to developing nuclear weapons and begin negotiations to give up its highly enriched uranium stockpile.
However, these conditions are considered far from the objectives that Trump had announced at the beginning of the conflict. At one point he had demanded "unconditional surrender" from Iran, while the US administration had included among its goals a complete ban on Iran's nuclear program and the cessation of support for allied groups in the Middle East.
Republican Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reacted sharply, stating that Trump "is being ill-advised to pursue an agreement that will not be worth the paper it is written on."
He also warned that reaching an agreement instead of resuming military action could create a "perception of weakness."
Senator Lindsey Graham also expressed concern that such an agreement would allow Iran to maintain influence over the Strait of Hormuz and threaten the energy infrastructure of its neighbors.
"This would be a major shift in the balance of power in the region and over time would become a nightmare for Israel," Graham said.

Sipas Pompeos, marrëveshja do të nënkuptonte “financim të Gardës Revolucionare iraniane për të zhvilluar programe armësh të shkatërrimit në masë dhe për të terrorizuar botën”.
Përplasjet kanë kaluar edhe në nivel publik mes mbështetësve të Trump. Zëdhënësi i Shtëpisë së Bardhë Steven Cheung sulmoi Pompeon, ndërsa këshilltari politik Alex Bruesewitz reagoi ndaj Ted Cruz duke e akuzuar se po përpiqet të minojë presidentin.
Nga ana tjetër, sekretari amerikan i Shtetit Marco Rubio mbrojti pozicionin e administratës duke deklaruar se angazhimi i Trump për të ndaluar Iranin të sigurojë armë bërthamore “nuk duhet të vihet në dyshim nga askush”.
Edhe vetë Trump reagoi ndaj kritikëve në rrjetin Truth Social, ku shkroi: “Mos dëgjoni humbësit që kritikojnë diçka për të cilën nuk dinë asgjë.”
Megjithatë, situata po bëhet gjithnjë e më e vështirë për presidentin amerikan. Administrata kishte parashikuar që lufta të zgjaste rreth një muaj, por konflikti po hyn në muajin e tretë dhe Irani nuk ka treguar shenja tërheqjeje përballë kërcënimeve amerikane.
Kjo ka lënë Trump përballë dy alternativave të vështira: rikthimin e sulmeve ushtarake, gjë që ai duket se nuk dëshiron ta bëjë, ose vazhdimin e një lufte konsumimi ekonomik ku të dyja palët përpiqen të përballojnë presionin e krijuar nga tensionet në ngushticën e Hormuzit.
Në të njëjtën kohë, presidenti rrezikon të përballet me pakënaqësi në të dy krahët e Partisë Republikane. For many of these figures, the current conflict is seen as an opportunity to ultimately weaken Iran and its influence in the region. For this very reason, they fear that Trump may withdraw before achieving his self-proclaimed objectives.
