The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is openly accused of spying for Russia. The accusations have come from leading politicians, including the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens.
"Russia is certainly using its obvious influence in parliament, especially in the AfD, to spy and steal sensitive information," said the chairman of the Bundestag's Intelligence Committee, Mark Heinrichmann (CDU), in Handelsblatt, and stressed that the Kremlin is only interested in this party for hybrid warfare purposes.
"The AfD is gratefully allowing itself to be linked to Putin's bandwagon for this betrayal ," Heinrichmann added.
Commission Vice-President Konstantin von Notz of the Greens reaches a similar conclusion:
"The AfD is harming our country by consciously becoming a mouthpiece for the dictators of the world and bringing their narratives into the public debate and our parliaments," von Notz told the same newspaper.
Along the same lines, Thuringia's Interior Minister, Georg Meyer (SPD), told Handelsblatt that he sees an "aspect of betrayal" in the AfD, which would also constitute grounds for banning it.
"For some time now, we have noticed with growing concern that the AfD is abusing its parliamentary right to ask questions in order to specifically investigate our critical infrastructure. The same applies at the federal level ," Meyer said, referring to ongoing questions about the operation of drones and the actions of German police.
"They are particularly interested in IT, digital infrastructure, the transport of military equipment, police equipment, drone detection and protection procedures, transport infrastructure, water and energy supply. It is almost inevitable that the AfD is working on a Kremlin order book," Georg Maier told BILD, noting that the AfD is "clearly interested in investigating and collecting sensitive information in a structured way."
