"The risk of being killed seemed normal to him", judge Rocco Chinnici

Judge Rocco Chinnici is one of the most important figures in the fight against the mafia in Italy.

On 29 July 1983, a car bomb explosion in Palermo killed Chinnici, two of his bodyguards, Mario Trapassi and Salvatore Bartolotta, and the caretaker of his apartment block, Stefano Li Sacchi.

The judge's son, in an interview with News24, shared details from life with his father, at a time when he was constantly threatened by the mafia.

Excerpt from the interview:

What was your father's daily life like outside of his work as a judge? You wrote a book about him, "300 Days of Sunshine," how would you describe it?

Giovanni Chinnici: In the book "300 Days of Sunshine", I have recounted my life as the son of Rocco Chinnici, precisely during the period when my father was engaged against the mafia and organized crime in Sicily. But he was also a father. These duties, father, magistrate and husband, were part of a man. What I describe is related to his role as a father, but also as a magistrate. He was a very cheerful, smiling man. He was the same in the office with his colleagues, and he had this psychological strength, this great courage that pushed him to face a mafia that in those years was very violent and dangerous, he always faced it with great calm. He also conveyed this to us family members, despite the very great risks.

How did he experience the danger that accompanied him every day?

Giovanni Chinnici: He lived it very normally. He said that for a judge in those years it was normal to face the risk of being killed. And beyond that, he faced his duty as head of the investigation office as if it were a normal thing, an ordinary thing. And this normality, even though in reality he was doing something extremely strong against the mafia, he also conveyed to us family members. So for us he did a normal job.

Was your family fully aware of the risks he faced?

Giovanni Chinnici: Yes, he was. He was fully aware of it, because threats were also received by phone, at that time there were no mobile phones. So these threats were made either by letters or by the home phone. Sometimes his children were taken from us, or from my mother. So we knew very well the dangers he faced. Beyond that, in those years several magistrates had already been killed: Terranova, Costa, they were colleagues of my father who were killed a few years before him, various police officers, civil servants, in those years it was known that anyone who confronted the mafia could be killed. So we were fully aware. But thanks to his calmness, his allegro, we managed to face that danger calmly. /BW/
