The US president reacted sharply to a question about the restoration of the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial, as the US faces international tensions and rising fuel prices.
Donald Trump clashed with an ABC News reporter during a visit to the Reflecting Pool near the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington, where restoration work is underway.
His visit to the historic National Mall on Thursday was unannounced. The project aims to repair leaks, stains and pollution in the reflecting pool, ahead of activities for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
During the inspection of the works, Trump praised the team working on the restoration and said the project cost about two million dollars. ABC News' Rachel Scott asked him whether such an investment was appropriate at a time when the US is facing the conflict in Iran and rising gas prices.
Trump immediately intervened, saying the restoration was necessary to maintain the country's security and appearance. He argued that the area needed cleaning and described Washington as "dirty."

According to him, members of the National Guard have been engaged in cleanup work that, as he said, should have been carried out by the National Park Service, an institution that according to Trump has suffered financial cuts. "You may not see the dirt, but I see it," he told the journalist.
During his statements, Trump repeatedly used incorrect terms for the Reflecting Pool, calling it a "lake" or a "park," which added to the tension in his communication with the media. The president called the journalist's question "stupid" and accused ABC News of spreading "fake news," saying that such questions "are an embarrassment to the country."
