A serious criminal incident has shocked the city of Piacenza in Italy, where a 60-year-old man of Macedonian origin is suspected of murdering his wife inside the apartment where they lived.
According to Italian media, the suspected perpetrator, Hako Vitanov, called the emergency number 112 himself immediately after the crime and told the operators: “Come, I have killed my wife.” After the call, he left the apartment, losing track of it for several hours.
Police and carabinieri immediately arrived at the couple's apartment, on the outskirts of Piacenza, where they found the lifeless body of 56-year-old Milena Vitanova .
"A knife was also found next to the body, suspected of being used in the crime," Italian media report.
According to preliminary investigations, the victim had wounds and marks on her hands, which raises suspicions that she tried to defend herself during the fatal attack. Italian authorities are expected to shed more light on the incident after the autopsy.
Meanwhile, law enforcement immediately began searching for the perpetrator, who was found about two hours later in the monumental cemetery of Piacenza, next to the grave of his son who had passed away years earlier.
Italian media also wrote that the 60-year-old had attempted to end his life by cutting his wrists, but was neutralized in time by the police. After first aid, he was arrested and escorted to the police station.
The couple had four children. Two of them, according to authorities, had left the apartment shortly before the incident and were staying with a relative nearby.
