US forces have launched another armed operation against drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific, where a ship suspected of smuggling narcotics was hit by the US military, killing two people.
According to the United States Southern Command, the ship had been identified in an area known for drug trafficking activities and was considered a suspected smuggling target.
Video footage released by the US military shows the moment the vessel is hit by what appears to be a missile and then engulfed in flames in the middle of the ocean.
"The vessel was moving in a known narcotics trafficking corridor," the US Southern Command statement said.

US authorities confirmed that the two victims were men, while only one person managed to survive. The US Coast Guard immediately intervened with a search and rescue operation to extract him from the area of the attack.
The operation is part of a series of actions taken by the US in the Pacific and Caribbean as part of the fight against drug trafficking. According to reports, 58 similar operations have been carried out against suspected smuggling vessels since September.
The Pentagon's actions have drawn strong reactions from international human rights organizations.
"This is about extrajudicial killings and a lack of legal transparency," Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have declared, condemning the American operations.
On the other hand, the US Department of Defense has defended the attacks, considering them part of the fight against "narco-terrorism" in the region.
