Earthquake in Venezuela, over 2,500 dead and thousands missing

The situation in Venezuela remains dramatic a week after two devastating earthquakes struck the country, while the death toll continues to mount.

According to acting president Delcy Rodriguez, the death toll has reached 2,595, while over 12,000 people have been injured. Authorities also report that around 38,500 people are still missing.

The two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused extensive damage to infrastructure. According to official data, nearly 800 buildings were severely damaged, while 189 of them completely collapsed.

Intensive search and rescue operations continue on the ground, with local and international teams working to find people trapped under the rubble. Although hopes of finding survivors are fading as the days go by, authorities have announced that the search will not be stopped.

A moment of hope came with the rescue of Herman Gil, who was pulled alive from the rubble eight days after the earthquake, in an operation that was described as a miracle by emergency teams.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimates that the economic damage caused by the earthquakes exceeds $10 billion. The Venezuelan government has declared seven days of national mourning in honor of the victims.
