Meloni says it bluntly: Europe must defend itself

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was interviewed by Enrico Mentana on the 8:00 PM news program on La7, where a range of topics were discussed, from the war in Ukraine to the Gaza Strip, from the referendum on justice to the budget plan.

"If Europe wants to be great, it must be able to defend itself," Meloni explains, adding that "when you hand over security to someone else, you have to know that there is a price to pay."

"What happened at the NATO summit is exactly that; it did not surprise me. We know that it is an inevitable process and it is an opportunity for us. It is clear that defense has an economic cost and creates political freedom," she stressed.

Regarding Ukraine, the Prime Minister stated that "the Government's position has been very clear from the beginning: we have supported Ukraine in building peace. Peace is not built with good intentions, but with restraint. The government's line must remain the same in order to build a path towards peace."

Regarding Gaza, the Prime Minister reiterated the position that her government has expressed several times: for the recognition of the State of Palestine.

"I remain faithful to the line indicated by Parliament: it voted for a resolution that foresees the recognition of the Palestinian state when two conditions are met: the disarmament of Hamas and the assurance that it has no role in the governance of Gaza. Italy's efforts are aimed at implementing Trump's plan, which is complex, but it is an opportunity that may not come again," Meloni stressed.

Regarding the referendum on justice, Meloni stated firmly: "don't worry, the government will remain in office until the end of the legislature, regardless of how the referendum on justice ends."
