US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today that the European Union's fine against Elon Musk's "X" constitutes "an attack on the American people by foreign governments."
"The $140 million fine imposed by the European Commission is not just an attack on Platform X, it is an attack on all American technology platforms and the American people, by foreign governments," Rubio said in a post on Musk's network.
"The era of censorship of Americans online is over," he added.

The European Commission has imposed a fine of 120 million euros on the "X" platform for violating the transparency obligations provided for in the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The violations include the deceptive design of the "blue badge," lack of transparency in the ad repository, and failure to provide access to public data for researchers.
According to the reasoning behind the decision, the use of the “blue badge” for “verified accounts” misleads users and anyone can pay to get “verified” status without the company actually verifying who is behind the account, making it difficult for users to judge the authenticity of the accounts and the content they interact with.
“This scam exposes users to fraud, including impersonation, as well as other forms of manipulation by malicious actors,” according to the Commission, which explains that “although the Digital Services Act does not require mandatory user verification, it expressly prohibits platforms from falsely claiming that a user is verified when this has not happened.”
