The EU has fined Elon Musk's social media platform X 120 million euros over its blue checkmarks, sparking an angry response from the US. The European Commission said that by allowing people to pay for a blue verified checkmark on their profile, the platform "misleads users" because the firm is not "meaningfully verifying" who is behind the account.
"This scam exposes users to fraud, including impersonation scams, as well as other forms of manipulation by malicious actors ," she said.
But the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) accused the Commission of targeting X only because it was "a successful American technology company".
In addition to complaining about the use of “blue ticks” signals, EU regulators said X was also failing to provide transparency about its advertising and was not giving researchers access to public data.
