Security alert, mysterious drones fly over nuclear base in France; defense

Several drones flew over the submarine base on Île Longue in Finistère on Thursday evening, December 4, where nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines are located, the gendarmerie announced.

The base, home to France's nuclear deterrent system and nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), was immediately put on alert.

At around 19:30 on Thursday, five drones were technically identified over the high-security zone, which is located near the port of Brest. The gendarmerie and naval forces activated a specialized counter-drone operation, while the Marine Rifle Battalion, tasked with protecting the base, launched several strikes against the unmanned aerial vehicles.

French media reports that authorities have not provided information on the origin of the drones or whether they have been completely neutralized. Drone flights over this restricted area are not uncommon. On the night of November 17-18, another drone was reported over the Crozon peninsula, although it did not enter the area of military installations.

The Île Longue base, one of France's most protected facilities, is guarded by around 120 naval gendarmes who work in close coordination with the Marines to ensure the security of the French nuclear arsenal. Authorities remain on high alert due to the risk of possible espionage activities or other aerial provocations.
