Valter Lavitola, now the owner of a fish restaurant in Rome that is also frequented by journalists, is under investigation for manslaughter. He was previously convicted of extortion against Silvio Berlusconi in 2014…
"I'm shocked. Lavitola and I are friends. I can't believe it." This is how Sigfrido Ranucci commented on the unexpected development of the investigation into the assassination attempt against him. According to the investigation, the trail does not lead to either the Camorra or Albanian groups.
The lead considered the most reliable for identifying the person who ordered the attack is also the most unexpected. It leads to Valter Lavitola, previously convicted of extortion against Silvio Berlusconi (in 2014), who has now returned to public life as the owner of a fish restaurant near Trastevere. According to the indictment, he had assigned his waiter the role of intermediary with the perpetrators of the attack and, after the attack, had sent him to Cameroon, Italian media report.
In the proceedings issued by the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of Rome, within the framework of the investigations into the assassination attempt against Ranucci and carried out by the Carabinieri of the Rome Investigation Unit, in addition to Valter Lavitola, Pellegrino D'Avino, Antonio Passariello, Saverio Mutone, Luca Amato, Marika De Filippis and Clesio Tavares Gomes (waiter) are also under investigation. The prosecution attributes to them, according to their respective roles, the criminal offenses of collaboration in attempted massacre, possession, keeping and illegal use of explosives, serious damage and serious threat, all with the aggravation of mafia method.
According to the prosecution's hypothesis, Lavitola had the role of ordering the assassination, while Gomes served as an intermediary between the suspected ordering party and the material perpetrators of the attack.
The former director of the newspaper Avanti! has been searched by the Carabinieri of the Investigation Unit, initially coordinated by the prosecutor Carlo Villani and then by his colleague Edoardo De Santis, who has taken over the continuation of the investigation. According to the preliminary reconstruction, still incomplete, his vehicle was also among those seen during the surveillance carried out by the assassins near the journalist's apartment. Another person is also under investigation, who is suspected of having served as a liaison with the executioners. According to the investigations, he was commissioned precisely by Lavitola, who will be questioned tomorrow.
Personal or professional motives?
Before prosecutors, Lavitola will have to clarify his relations with the suspected perpetrators of the explosion: Antonio Passariello, Saverio Mutone, Pellegrino D'Avino and Marika De Filippi, arrested last week.
A ishte motivi personal apo profesional?

A few months ago, suspicions were raised that the assassination attempt on the Italian journalist was carried out by Albanian groups. 'La Repubblica' wrote that the name under investigation is Artur Shehu, 58 years old, an entrepreneur of Albanian origin, considered by some investigations to be a major figure in Albanian organized crime. He currently lives in the United States, in Florida, where he leads a reserved life in Miami, where he has been based for several years.
According to investigative sources, the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate (DIA) has also received information from Vlora, in southern Albania, about the possibility of Shehu's involvement in the explosion that occurred on October 16, in the apartment of the host of the Report show.
This is, at the moment, a hypothesis that still requires verifications and final evidence, but which is being carefully followed by the magistrates of the Regional Anti-Mafia Directorate of Rome, the prosecutor Ilaria Calò and her deputy Carlo Villani, in collaboration with the carabinieri of the Frascati Investigation Unit and those of Via In Selci, who have been engaged for days to reconstruct every detail of the assassination.
The possible motive is thought to be related to a Report broadcast dated April 21, 2024, titled "(Hot) Spot Albanian", dedicated to the project of centers for migrants that Italy has built in Albania, in Shengjin and Gjadra, within the framework of the agreement between the governments of Rome and Tirana.
In Raitre's program, the 58-year-old Albanian is described as a major drug trafficker, previously cited in international investigations for possible links to Cosa Nostra and Sacra Corona Unita.
Shehu's name was not unknown to the international press either. In March 2021, the American newspaper Miami Herald devoted an in-depth investigation to him with the headline: "From a villa in Miami Beach, a man with suspected mafia ties builds a business empire in Albania."
The article describes in detail his life in the US, telling of a villa on Alton Road, "a few steps from Biscayne Bay", surrounded by royal palm trees, with a neat garden and two luxury cars parked at the entrance. / Pamphlet /
