Former Republican campaign chief strategist in the 2016 election, Steve Bannon, has claimed that "Donald Trump will be president in 2028" and people "just have to adjust to that."
Steve Bannon, one of the key figures behind contemporary alt-right media, declared in an interview with The Economist that President Donald Trump "will be president in 2028 and people just have to adjust to that."
Constitutional scholars point out that the concept of a president seeking a third term, let alone completing one, is expressly prohibited by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — a restriction that Trump and his supporters have previously stated they are "not kidding" about running.
Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist who received a presidential pardon in 2020 after his conviction for money laundering and conspiracy to commit fraud — this week described Trump as an “instrument of divine providence.” “We have to finish what we started,” declared Bannon, who gained fame in 2016 for his political tactic of “flooding the area with (you know what).”
While constitutional experts claim there are no "credible legal arguments" supporting a third presidential term, Bannon insisted there are "many different alternatives" that Trump could consider.
Trump has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of seeking a third term since returning to office in January. He has mentioned in media interviews that "a lot of people want me to do it", while his organization is selling £50 red hats embroidered with "Trump 2028", the Mirror US reports.
His son, Eric, was pictured wearing the hat in an announcement on Trump's official online merchandise store, accompanied by the caption: "The future looks bright!" In January, Trump told his supporters that it would be "the greatest honor of my life to serve not once, but twice or three times or four times." Later, in an interview with NBC, he seemed to back down from his convictions, saying his message to his supporters is that "we have a long way to go, you know, it's very early in the administration."
He questioned whether the 22nd Amendment ultimately bars Trump from running again.
"If the American people, with the mechanisms we have, return Trump to office, are the American people tearing up the Constitution?" he said.
The US Constitution is clear in terms of clear term limits set for presidents, according to legal experts.
"No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President for more than two years of a term for which another person has been elected President, shall be elected to the office of President more than once," the 22nd Amendment states.
To amend the Constitution, Trump would require the support of two-thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives, plus approval from three-quarters of state governments, according to the BBC.
Yet Trump and many of his appointees have shown a confrontational attitude toward constitutional boundaries and their official roles. Trump has repeatedly turned to the Supreme Court to secure legal victories, taking cases against him to America's highest court, where he can rely largely on its conservative majority to rule in his favor.
