Cuba on the verge of collapse, the government takes dramatic measures to survive

Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga announced on state television new austerity measures to deal with the economic and energy crisis in the country, including the introduction of a four-day work week in the administration and state enterprises, remote working, restrictions on fuel sales, reduced public transport services, the temporary closure of some tourist attractions and university programs with optional participation.

The aim of these decisions is to save fuel and energy to maintain food and electricity production and protect key economic activities, while the country faces serious shortages of energy resources and basic supplies.

The aggravated situation is related to the total interruption of oil imports from Venezuela, Cuba's main supplier for years, after Washington undertook a military operation in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro in January 2026, which led to the complete ban on oil shipments to the island and escalated Cuba's energy and economic crisis.

Amid these energy shortages, the country is experiencing frequent power outages, paralyzed public transport, and increasing difficulties in supplying food and medicine, while Cuban leaders are demanding "sacrifices" from the population to cope with the situation, which some analysts compare to the crisis period of the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
