Russian President Vladimir Putin has reacted directly to US sanctions against Russia for the first time. He said the sanctions would not affect Russia's economy, but described them as an "unfriendly act" that does not strengthen its relations with the US.
"Sanctions are an attempt to put pressure on Russia, but dialogue is always better than war ," Putin said in his speech at the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow.
Putin further emphasized that replacing Russian oil on the global market will take time and lead to price increases, implying that this move will have consequences for the West itself.
He further suggested that there are certain people in the US administration who have encouraged Trump to restrict Russian oil exports and called on the US president to consider who these individuals are actually working for.
Meanwhile, speaking about the canceled summit with Donald Trump in Budapest, Putin said the meeting was proposed by the US. He then attempted to correct Trump's words yesterday, who said the meeting had been canceled, by suggesting that the meeting had simply been postponed.
The Russian leader said it would have been a mistake to hold a summit without the necessary preparations, suggesting a meeting could take place at a later date.
A Russia-US summit, which was scheduled to be held in the Hungarian capital, was announced last week by the Kremlin and the White House after a phone call between Trump and Putin. However, on Wednesday, Trump announced that the meeting would be postponed. On the same day, Washington imposed sanctions on two major Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
