NATO chief warns of new moves by Trump: Eastern Europe most at risk
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson have called for NATO allies to increase spending on supporting Ukraine, stressing that the financial burden is currently not being shared equally among member countries.

Rutte stated that contributions to Ukraine's defense "are not evenly distributed within NATO," adding that only a limited group of states are truly leading the effort.

He cited Sweden, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark as the countries making the largest contributions, while saying that many other countries are "not spending enough" on supporting Ukraine.

For his part, Kristersson said that Sweden is the third largest donor to Ukraine and that it would be much better if more countries matched the level of support his country is providing.

"We need to be long-term and steadfast in our support. I would like more countries, which speak so strongly in support of Ukraine, to support this with concrete finances as well," Kristersson said.

Meanwhile, Rutte hinted that the US could announce further changes to its military commitments to Europe in the coming days. These changes are linked to the American plan to "rebalance" the alliance and reduce NATO's dependence on the US.

According to previous reports, the US administration is considering the possibility of reducing the military capabilities that would be made available to European allies in the event of major crises or conflicts.

Asked by Swedish public broadcaster SVT about these changes, Rutte said:

"I have an idea of what could happen. This issue will be discussed in other forums and may be on the agenda tomorrow."

However, he stressed that he is not concerned about this development and argued that it is normal for the alliance to "rebalance."

"What will be announced later this week and next week by the US is entirely feasible and precisely the reason why we started the process last year to increase defense spending," the NATO chief said.

Rutte described the entire process as a "normal and structured procedure," although these signals are expected to increase concern in Central and Eastern European countries, which depend more on the American military presence for their security.
