NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte defended the absence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio from today's talks in the Belgian capital, saying the US will be represented and its involvement will remain strong.
"The US presence will be felt today as well. They are constantly involved in the talks," Rutte told reporters as he arrived at NATO headquarters.
Regarding the threats of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who last night declared that he is ready for war with Europe if necessary, Rutte avoided commenting on each statement of the Russian leader and, on the contrary, tried to minimize his rhetoric.
"It is not the right approach to respond to everything Putin says," Rutte said.
The Organization's Secretary-General, however, noted that the strategy for reaching a peace agreement is to continue pressure on Russia and ensure the continued flow of weapons to Ukraine, with the aim of strengthening its defense.
"Achieving peace depends on continued support for Ukraine and on exerting continued pressure on Russia," he stressed.
The NATO Secretary General also said it is encouraging that talks on ending the war in Ukraine are continuing, but noted that it is necessary to ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest possible position during the negotiations.
"Ukraine must be able to negotiate from a position of strength. Moscow continues to test our deterrence capability, we face real and ongoing risks," said the NATO Secretary General, and went on to say that Russia has violated NATO airspace with aircraft and drones, carried out sabotage and sent spy ships into alliance waters.
"These actions are reckless and dangerous. Russia is working closely with China, North Korea and Iran to disrupt our societies and destroy global rules," he said, adding that he was preparing for a long-term confrontation.
