Incident in Romania, Putin mocks von der Leyen for war with NATO: The Russians
Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reacted to an incident in Romania where a drone crashed into a residential complex, injuring two people. He rejected allegations that the aircraft belonged to the Russian military and said its origin could not be determined without a full investigation.

According to Putin, similar cases have occurred before in other European countries, where drones were initially identified as Russian, but later turned out to be of Ukrainian origin. He argued that electronic interference during combat could cause these vehicles to deviate from their trajectory.

“Ms. von der Leyen was not in Romania. She did not examine the remains of this drone. No one can say where a particular drone comes from until it is examined. After all, we know that Ukrainian drones have flown in Finland, Poland and elsewhere in the Baltic states. The initial reaction was exactly the same as now in Romania: ‘Help, Russian drones are coming, they are shooting.’ Then, a little later, it turned out that these had nothing to do with Russian drones at all, but on the contrary these drones were of Ukrainian origin; they had deviated from the course, they had been affected by electronic warfare,” the Russian president said.

During his statement, the Kremlin leader also rejected claims that Russia is preparing for a direct conflict with NATO. He described these scenarios as untrue and said they are being used to fuel fear in Western public opinion.

"This is absurd. This is supposedly being done in connection with Russia's aggressive plans against the countries of Western Europe. This is a lie. It is a crude and shameless lie. And, as Goebbels once said, the more unbelievable the lie, the more likely it is to be believed. These are precisely the standards that Western politicians and media are applying in their daily practice," Putin said.

Putin also commented on the security situation in the Kaliningrad region, stating that Russia has sufficient capabilities to respond to any attack on this territory.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the Russian president said that developments on the front give Moscow reason to believe that the conflict is approaching a final phase.

His statements come at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and the West. Earlier, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, warned European countries in threatening tones, stating that they would no longer feel safe.

The incident in the Romanian city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine, prompted condemnation from NATO and the European Union. Ukrainian authorities presented the case as further evidence of the threat Russia poses to European security, they said.
