Underwater drone captured in Greece

A naval drone equipped with explosives and advanced technology has caused alarm in Greece after it was discovered off the coast of Lefkada. Greek authorities have already transferred the device to Athens, where Armed Forces specialists are analyzing all its technical and operational elements.

According to initial evidence and investigative information, the drone had three sensors on its front, two of which were damaged when the object was located at sea. Experts suspect that the device may have collided with rocks, losing orientation and navigation control.

The operation to neutralize the drone was considered high-risk. Greek army special forces carried out a controlled explosion to destroy about 100 kilograms of explosives placed inside a barrel at the front of the vessel. The intervention took place in the maritime area of Astakos under strict security measures.

According to Greek media, the object is considered technologically advanced and autonomous. The president of the Lefkada port workers, Stathis Vasilatos, told "ERT News" that authorities immediately arrived at the scene and ordered to maintain a safe distance without touching the object. He explained that the drone was equipped with integrated batteries and a GPS navigation system.

" In the center was a high-resolution camera and two panels that were most likely connected to the GPS system. It was black, very low above the water surface, about a meter, so that it was not easily identified at night ," he said.

According to him, the device may have lost its GPS signal or been affected by atmospheric conditions, ending up uncontrolled towards rocky shores.

" There were three sensors in front. Two of them were broken when we found it, which indicates that it likely crashed and lost orientation ," Vasilatos added.

The drone was discovered by two fishing brothers, Dimitris and Panagiotis Zogkos, residents of the Vasiliki area of Lefkada. Panagiotis Zogkos told Open television that they initially thought it was a fisherman at sea.

We left Vasiliki at 5 am. When we passed Cape Dukato we saw a black object moving in circles. I thought it was a fishing boat without lights. It was 50 to 100 meters from the rocks and it seemed to have collided with the front ,” he said.

According to the fisherman, they left to raise their nets and when they returned two hours later, the object was still there.

" Two Bulgarian fishermen told us that the vessel had no captain and the engine was still running, while the front part remained on the rocks ," he said.

The fisherman admitted that if they had known the object contained explosives, they would never have approached it.

Greek authorities have not yet provided official information on the origin of the drone or its destination, while investigations are ongoing to determine whether it is military equipment, sabotage or activity related to regional tensions in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
