John Bolton, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser who later became his opponent, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Maryland, according to two sources.
Bolton, who has been under investigation for illegally handling classified information, becomes the third high-profile political foe of Trump to be indicted in less than a month.
According to sources for CNN, he allegedly shared highly classified information with his wife and daughter via email.
Sources previously told CNN that part of the Justice Department's investigation focuses on notes he kept to himself in an AOL email account — occasionally writing diary-like summaries of his activities — while working for Trump.
FBI agents executed a search warrant at Bolton's home in Maryland and his office in Washington, D.C., this summer. Agents seized several documents labeled "secret," "confidential" and "classified," including some related to weapons of mass destruction, according to court documents.
Bolton is expected to surrender himself on Friday.
