Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that Hamas and Israel intend to respect the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to the official, the latest ceasefire violation was expected. Al Thani stressed that both sides confirm that the ceasefire must be respected and that they must adhere to the agreement.
"We have been engaging with both sides in a very intensive way to ensure that the ceasefire is respected. And the US engagement, of course, was key in that. I believe that what happened yesterday was a violation of the ceasefire and we expected this violation and response," he said at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
On October 28, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered intensified strikes against targets in the Gaza Strip. The decision came after Israel alleged that Hamas supporters had violated the ceasefire by firing at Israeli troops in the Rafah area of southern Gaza.
In response, the Israeli military targeted several military sites inside the territory. Hamas denied involvement in the Rafah incident and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire. According to the latest reports, at least 104 Palestinians, including 46 children, were killed and 253 others injured in Israeli attacks overnight.
