Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine have reportedly alarmed the NATO military alliance.

The Secretary General of the European Union, Mark Rutte, has arrived in Kiev where he met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymy Zelensky.

NATO has not made an official announcement about the visit as it was not anticipated, but lack of warning is common due to high security concerns during the conflict.

Rutte and Zelensky paid tribute at "Independence Square" in honor of Ukrainian soldiers who lost their lives in the war.

Rutte's visit comes after Russia launched massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The city has been repeatedly hit by ballistic missiles.

"The bombing of Kharkiv has continued for more than three hours. The goal is to cause maximum damage and leave the city without heating in the middle of winter,"  said Mayor Igor Terekhov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the Russian attacks, saying that Russia prefers terror over diplomacy. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump seems unfazed by the attacks. He told reporters at the White House that there is progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine and that there may be good news soon.
