Donald Trump may have won the battles at the ballot box and in the courtroom, but the Epstein dossier remains a persistent threat to his legacy. Even with the state apparatus in hand, suspicions of a cover-up and old connections risk tarnishing his image more severely than any previous crisis...
Donald Trump always pulls it off! That's been true throughout his life. Whatever the crisis or scandal, Trump seems to have finally overcome it. His casino businesses went bankrupt and Trump was fine again.
He was denounced by Republicans after the January 6, 2021 uprising and quickly recovered. He was found guilty of 34 felony charges in a New York court, but was re-elected president.
Even Trump's critics acknowledge this fact. He earned the nickname "Teflon Don" (nothing sticks to him) during his first term, and the nickname has stuck with him ever since. Trump has had a 79-year streak of good luck, and he doesn't seem to expect his streak to end anytime soon.
The president appears to be celebrating after the recent release of documents from the Epstein files by the Justice Department, which have raised big questions about figures like Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson, but nothing too hard for Trump. The president seems so confident that history is going his way that on Monday he threatened to sue Grammys host Trevor Noah over a joke he made about Trump's visit to Epstein's island during the ceremony.
It is characteristic of Trump to treat a scandal about the rape, trafficking, and systematic abuse of women and girls over a period of years as another political soccer ball - or a stick with which to beat his opponents.
But it could also represent the arrogance of a president who is increasingly out of touch with reality, planning monuments all over Washington, naming buildings after himself, and trying to secure prestigious awards in his name. Trump may have forgotten some of the facts on the ground when it comes to the Epstein story.
It is true that the attention in recent days has been on figures like Mandelson, Mountbatten-Windsor and numerous figures from Hollywood - including Melania's agent, Brett Ratner - and academics.
But if anyone in Trump's world were capable of thinking more than one step ahead, it might give him reason to pause. Many of these figures were on the fringes of Epstein's orbit. They often stood by him.

This dossier is one he can't get rid of. Trump is not the first man to be nicknamed "Teflon Don." The first was a New York mobster, a brash and media-friendly guy, John Gotti, who went on trial three times in the 1980s and was acquitted in all three cases, seen as untouchable.
