At least nine people have been killed and several others injured in a wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine, during which one of the most important religious monuments in Kiev was severely damaged.

According to Ukrainian authorities, four people were killed in the attacks in Kiev, while five rescue workers were killed while trying to put out a fire caused by a Russian strike in the northeastern city of Kharkiv. The Dormition Cathedral, built in the 11th century and part of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, suffered significant damage. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko called the attack a “brutal attack on our people and our heritage.”

Drone and missile strikes set buildings and vehicles on fire, while more than 140,000 Kiev residents were left without electricity, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Ukrainian authorities reported that most of the country was on alert for airstrikes.

In Kiev, the attacks hit several residential buildings and injured at least 23 people. Five more people were injured in Kharkiv. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kiev would seek an immediate response from UNESCO and other international mechanisms over the damage to the historic cathedral.

Meanwhile, Poland announced it had scrambled fighter jets and activated ground-based air defense systems as a preventive measure due to Russian attacks near its borders. In Russia, a Ukrainian drone strike in the city of Tula, south of Moscow, killed three people and wounded three others, including a one-year-old child, according to local authorities.

The events come on the eve of the G7 summit in France this week, where the war in Ukraine is expected to be a major topic of discussion. On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had spoken with US President Donald Trump about efforts to end the conflict, which has been ongoing since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched by President Vladimir Putin in 2022.
