Surrender or confrontation, Trump gives Maduro two options; Venezuela mobilizes

Tensions between the US and Venezuela are rising rapidly, as Donald Trump has sent a stark warning to Nicolás Maduro: he can choose "the easy way or the hard way," a message that is being interpreted by analysts as an open ultimatum to the authoritarian leader of Caracas.

Dressed in camouflage uniform, Maduro appeared before crowds in the capital, calling on his followers to prepare to defend the country “from any imperialist aggression.” He sought to revive the spirit of Simón Bolívar, presenting himself as a follower of the Latin American liberation tradition.

"We must be able to defend every inch of this blessed land from any threat or aggression, from whoever comes," Maduro declared to citizens he called "the revolutionary people of Caracas."

"Swear before Christ that I will give everything for the victory of Venezuela," he added, promising to defend the skies, mountains and fields of his country.

Speaking from the board of Air Force One as he departed for Florida, Trump refused to explain the real goal of the four-month pressure campaign on Venezuela, while many analysts believe the objective is to overthrow Maduro, accused of rigging last year's election.

Officially, the large US military presence in the Caribbean Sea is justified as part of an operation against Latin American drug traffickers who are “flooding the US with narcotics.” Washington has even accused Maduro of running a “cartel” called the “Cartel of the Suns,” a group that was recently designated a foreign terrorist organization, although many experts say such a structure is more myth than reality.

Trump spoke in vague but threatening tones: "I'm not going to tell you the purpose. You have to know for yourself," he said, hinting that he might speak to Maduro.
