Russia says the animals will help restore the tiger population in Central Asia...

Russia has handed over four Amur tigers, including two cubs, to Kazakhstan to help the country restore its tiger population, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in an article published ahead of his visit to Kazakhstan this week.

Kazakhstan, rich in critical energy and mineral resources, shares a border with Russia and remains a close ally of Moscow in a region where China and the United States are also expanding their influence.

Putin said on the Kremlin website that the four tigers were captured in the Khabarovsk region in Russia's Far East and flown to Kazakhstan. He said the animals are expected to be released into the wild soon.

The Russian president has used animals as part of diplomacy before. In 2022, Russia sent North Korea 30 grey horses, as the two countries strengthened ties after the war in Ukraine. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is known to be a keen horse rider.

Kazakhstan is trying to restore the tiger population in Central Asia and considers the Amur tiger to be a relative of the now extinct Caspian tiger. The Russian gift adds to the number of tigers Kazakhstan has previously received from the Netherlands.

During the visit, Putin is expected to oversee the signing of an agreement for a nuclear power project in Kazakhstan, which currently does not produce nuclear power. The Kremlin has said the parties will also discuss increasing the transit of Russian oil to China via Kazakh territory.
