A problem with one of the engines forced the cancellation of the flight from Tenerife; King Felipe made his private plane available for the Pope's return to the Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV will return to Rome on the private jet of King Felipe VI of Spain, after the plane that was supposed to transport him from Tenerife suffered a technical problem before takeoff.

After more than an hour of waiting on board, the Pope was forced to disembark. King Felipe, who had greeted him earlier, then escorted him to the airport's VIP lounge.

The plane's captain informed passengers that a problem had been detected in one of the aircraft's systems. According to him, technical teams were trying to resolve the defect.

The problem occurred as the plane was preparing to start the engines and move towards the runway. Sources on board said that the pilots noticed that one of the engines was not operating according to the predicted parameters.

In a later announcement, the commander explained that the maintenance team had suggested towing the aircraft into a headwind position to attempt an engine restart. According to him, the failure could have been caused by a light tailwind.

Iberia flight IB1477, carrying the Pope, his staff and the journalists accompanying him, was scheduled to depart at 3:20 p.m. local time and arrive at Rome's Fiumicino airport after more than four hours of travel.

An Iberia spokeswoman told Corriere della Sera that the plane had suffered a technical problem that could not be repaired immediately. She explained that all passengers were disembarked and that a replacement aircraft had departed from Madrid to operate the flight on the same day.

The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will travel to Rome on a plane provided by the King of Spain. The departure is expected to take place around 18:00 local time, while the arrival in Rome is expected around 23:00 Italian time.

Meanwhile, Holy See personnel and journalists on the papal flight will return in the coming hours on another plane provided by Iberia.
