US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz

US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has stated that Iran's efforts to force ships to implement a new protocol for transit through the Strait of Hormuz will affect not only the Middle East region, but the entire world.

“Iranian state media announced that the regime has created what it calls the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, which requires all ship captains in international shipping, commercial and civilian, to essentially register and pay a bribe, as well as a tax to use these international waterways. This doesn’t just affect this region. It affects the entire world ,” Waltz told reporters today.

The US representative made the comments at a press conference to discuss a draft UN Security Council resolution, supported by the US in cooperation with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the draft resolution presents a "real test for the UN".

In opposition to the resolution, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has written to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN member states and others, calling the draft "one-sided and incomplete."

"This text does not address any root cause of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz - namely, the military aggression and illegal use of force by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran ," Araghchi wrote in the letter.
